Chatô Self-Adhesive Scratching Mat — sofa, furniture and walls

This isn't about stopping your cat scratching, it's about giving it a better place to do it. This thick carpet mat sticks straight onto the arm of the sofa, a wall corner, a door or a cabinet. Your cat scratches the mat, not the fabric.

It comes as a roll and cuts with scissors to the exact size of the area you want to protect: a narrow strip on a door frame, a large rectangle on an armrest, a square on a cat tree.

What you should know

• It is not a clear film. This is visible carpet, made to be scratched — not to deter discreetly.
• The original adhesive isn't always enough. On fluffy fabric or a very smooth surface, add double-sided tape so it doesn't peel off when your cat pulls on it. The manufacturer recommends this too.
• Clean and dry the surface before fitting: the grip is much better.

The rule that changes everything

Fit it where your cat already scratches, not in the corner that suits you. A cat scratches to mark a route and stretch on waking: the place matters as much as the surface. If you move it later, do it a few centimetres at a time.
