Chatô Double-Sided Dematting Comb — steel blades, knots and undercoat

When the brush no longer goes through, this is the tool you need. A formed knot can't be brushed out: it has to be cut, strand by strand. This comb has two sides — the wide 9-blade side to open big knots, the dense 17-blade side to take out the undercoat.

The blades are sharpened on the inner edge and rounded on top: they cut through the knot without touching the skin.

What you should know — important

• Never pull on a knot. Hold the strand at its base, between the knot and the skin, and work in small passes on the outside of the knot. A cat's skin is thin and tears more easily than you'd think.
• Start with the 9-blade side, finish with the 17-blade side.
• Two minutes per session is enough. An old knot may take three or four sessions — that's normal, and better than one session by force.
• If the knot is stuck to the skin, or the skin underneath is irritated, stop and see a groomer or your vet.
